Information about Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House has two bedrooms and a futon type sofa. It can comfortably sleep three, two upstairs, and one in the downstairs bedroom. In a pinch the futon can be used for someone to sleep on also, however the comfort level might not be all that good. 

The upstairs is basically the whole bedroom, and full bath, which includes a deep tub, and shower. The water is good and hot, with detailed directions on how to use the hot water included with the Welcome packet. The bed is a queen size, and quite comfortable. There is also a chest of Drawers, that has all but the top drawer available for your use. There is also a built in closet with drawers available. The door to the wrap around upstairs balcony can be accessed from the upstairs room. There are a couple of tables and four chairs to use while you enjoy the views.

The downstairs bathroom has a deep shower, and again plenty of hot water available. Just read the welcome packet on the proper hot water instructions, as instant hot water heat can be a bit touchy at times. The bedroom has a double bed, that is again, quite comfortable. There is also a chest of drawers available (all but the top drawer).

The kitchen has a nice sized refrigerator with separate freezer. Please do not change the fridge settings. The kitchen oven/stove is gas and the oven is remarkably accurate in reaching the desired temperature. There are numerous cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc. available in the cabinet under the counter. In the overhead cabinet there are plenty of dishes, bowls, and glassware. If something inadvertently gets broken, please let us know. If you need something that we do not currently have available, please let us know also. we may be able to find something for you. There are also ample amounts of silverware in the drawer under the counter.

The downstairs has a nice sized deck with railing for you to enjoy the views with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. We have a table and four chairs their also. If you like to sit in a swinging chair, there is one available for your enjoyment, it is over by the steps.

There is a parilla (BBQ Grill) on the side of the house. If you need carbon, just contact Fernando and he can arrange to get you some. Alternately, carbon is available in small quantities at the various super mercados in Otavalo. Usually around $3 for a 10lb bag approximately. Please keep the parilla as clean as possible after using. Please do not move it from where it currently is.

We do have a washer and dryer available for those that are staying a month or longer. If you are staying a shorter period of time, there are several lavanderias in Otavalo that can wash, dry and fold your clothes as a one day service. This can be done for a reasonable price.

The house is heated by using the wood stove, which works quite well. Wood will be supplied during your stay. If you need more wood, or help in using the wood stove, please contact Fernando. Portable heaters draw way too much current for the wiring used in the house, and therefore can cause issues with blowing a circuit and/or causing an outlet to fail. The wood burning stove is easy to use, and provides a great amount of heat with just a small amount of wood.

 

If you run out of gas for the hot water, oven/stove, or dryer (if applicable), please contact Susie/Fernando to get it swapped out for a full one.
